ZipLip.com To Provide Free Web-Based Snoop Proof Email
Mountain View, Calif., July 1, 1999
ZipLip.com, Inc. announced that it will provide a free, totally private and snoop proof, Web-based email service from its Web site at www.ziplip.com.
"We intend to empower every user on the Internet with the ability to send private email which cannot be snooped. This free Web-based service will be called ZipLip, and it will radically enhance the privacy rights of all Internet users worldwide," said Kon Leong, president and chief executive officer of ZipLip.com, Inc.
No Email Privacy Today
While the volume of email has grown explosively with the Internet, so have concerns about the lack of privacy especially as the laws have not kept pace with technology. Reports continue to emerge about technology encroaching on the privacy of individuals. As people keep losing the right to keep their email private, court case after court case is being influenced by archived email records. Currently, email is as exposed as a postcard. Usually sent in plain text, email is open to examination while in transit, and, even years later, through stored archives, it can be exhumed for scrutiny.
The ZipLip Solution
With ZipLip, users who are security sensitive will send email, confident that it will not be read by intruders. "First, we will scramble every message so no snoop can read it. Then, we will password-protect each message so no snoop can open it. Finally, after it has been read," said Leong, "we will effectively shred the message so that there will be no useable copy left in the world." He added, "We believe that privacy is a right, not a privilege. To that end, we will offer this privacy protection service on the Web for free to all users."
Apart from personal email, users in privacy-sensitive industries including financial, healthcare, political, and legal professionals, can also use ZipLip to protect their business communications.
Two features of ZipLip will make it especially easy to use. First, it will provide high-level privacy but will require little effort to use. For instance, it will not require a special download of software, nor will it require you to set up another new email account, (which can be as inconvenient as changing your phone number). In fact, you will simply keep your existing email account, and when an occasion demands more security, use ZipLip as you need it.
Secondly, ZipLip will provide immediate privacy for email you send to anyone. There is no precondition that the sender or the recipient must be a subscriber to send or receive private email. And to truly respect privacy, ZipLip will not ask you to register, fill out forms, or provide any personal information of any kind.
Easy accessibility is another ZipLip advantage. "One thing I like about ZipLip," said Dr. Carolyn Turbyfill, a security systems expert, "is that I can walk up to any Web terminal at any airport and fire off a sensitive message to anyone out there, and be reasonably assured that it will reach the intended recipient with far better security than with today's typical email. In fact, I will even get a return receipt. I'm glad to see a service offering increased privacy in email that is free, easy to use and accessible to anyone with a Web browser."
